Description
The Principal R&D Engineer will develop, direct, and execute plans for successful completion of complex R&D product development activities relating to our next generation neurovascular coil device. Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to establish technical specifications for designing or modifying products/processes. Review progress of projects against design criteria/standards and recommend appropriate revisions. Design new products that contribute to the development of proprietary positions for BSC. Prepare reports to communicate results to technical community. Take a leadership role in application and advancement of technologies developed. Display significant initiative in solving complex and difficult technical problems with little support or guidance.
Job Responsibilities:
- Consistently generate and implement innovative and unique solutions to complex technical problems. This work results in the development of new or refined products, processes, or equipment. These solutions are practical and manufacturable.
- As a staff specialist to project teams, develop, evaluate, and execute problem solving criteria for a variety of projects with minimal supervision.
- When internal expertise is not adequate to solve an existing problem, locate and utilize external expertise.
- Assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests of products, or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is not advisable or practical. Where current tests and protocols are not adequate, will pro-actively generate new ones or credibly justify rationale for omission of testing.
- Interact with physicians to identify needs and problems and provide timely responses. Convert needs into product concepts and functioning prototypes.
- Successfully complete engineering work in one of the following: product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, process study, research investigations (pre-clinical and clinical studies), and protocol/report preparation
- Document and disclose patentable new product ideas in Lab Notebook and Invention Disclosure Forms. Routinely assess new concept and ideas for their patentablility. Assess where openings in current patent portfolio can be filled with new concepts and pro-actively evaluates these possibilities.
Position Qualifications:
BS in Engineering or related technical discipline (preferred: Mechanical, Materials Science, or Metallurgical concentration), plus at least eight (8) years of directly related experience; MS/Ph.D. degree may substitute for related industry experience where applicable. Or, equivalent combination of education and experience required to perform at this level. Background/experience in the design, development and commercialization of implantable/minimally invasive medical devices. Experience in neurovascular/cardiovascular/peripheral vascular medical device design is highly desirable. Experience with polymers is a plus.
Candidate must have strong oral communication skills and demonstrated aptitude in working with cross-functional team members on product development teams, with outside vendors and other BSC divisions. Proven ability to take product successfully through to market launch.
